Stockholm County Council and Locum have created concept programmes for new buildings within the county. These programmes are now being used to plan new acute-care units and operating suites at hospitals including Södersjukhuset (Stockholm South General Hospital), the Huddinge Hospital complex and Danderyd University Hospital.
“This is a unique project that we hope more councils will follow and study,” says Property Director Marie Boestad.
About the concept programmes
The goal of the programmes is to create architecture suited to its purpose:
* that supports the healthcare process and new logistics solutions;
* that improves patient security and privacy, and shortens the period of care;
* that enhances the work environment for staff;
* that has high architectural value and conveys a people-friendly environment.
Fundamental ideas/concepts have been created for the surgical, sterilisation, imaging, acute-care and maternity process areas.
Based on these areas, a ‘shell and core building’ has been created, with general requirements on the properties of the building’s design, technology, and long-term strategies. There are also proposals for concept solutions that show how these requirements can be met.
These programmes have been produced in collaboration with representatives of healthcare services, through participation in the project for erecting a new university hospital in the Karolinska hospital complex in Solna, and through studies of the latest research into healthcare buildings.
Emergency departments and operating suites of the future
These programmes are being used to plan new construction projects at hospitals including Stockholm South General Hospital, the Huddinge Hospital complex and Danderyd University Hospital. The emergency departments and operating suites no longer meet the requirements arising from developments in medicine and technology. In theory, the new operating suites should look the same at all the hospitals, with some adaptation to prevailing construction engineering conditions. The aim is to standardise the design of the premises as far as possible, since staff now move between the various hospitals to an increasing extent.
At the same time, the work can be streamlined and security increased if doctors and other staff are familiar with the layout of the various wards and departments. Also, major financial savings can be made through coordinating planning, development and construction.
“The great advantage of these concept programmes is that common goals for the three projects can be communicated. In that way, each individual hospital can focus on architectural adaptation and logistics,” says Locum’s Property Director Marie Boestad.
